It's important to address the elephant in the room (no pun intended). Flying is a major piece of travel, yet it contributes to half of the emissions made in the global travel industry altogether. For people to appreciate the beauty of our planet, and to showcase the positive impact of responsible tourism on nature and its inhabitants, it is a necessary evil. However, there have been shifts throughout the airline sector to help remedy that.
As of 2024, governments and companies worldwide have become some of the major players investing in the growing market that is SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), a fuel source made up of sustainable products such as used cooking oil, refined biofuels like algae, agricultural waste, municipal waste, captured carbon, and so on.
It works as an easier alternative to fossil fuels, for it can be used in pre-existing jet engines, which means no modifications or special manufacturing is required. In using SAF, airlines reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by at least 80% compared to fossil jet fuel.
The problem today is that SAF production on an industrial scale is still in its infancy, and therefore can be an expensive process to refine and distribute. That being said, there is a growing investment in research and development to make SAF more commercially viable, and as part of my business model to make an impact, 5% of your flight cost will be invested into SAF projects on your behalf, at no expense to you.
